Dates for your diary 2012

King's International Lecture Series

  • Date: Monday 23 January 2012, 5pm
  • Title: Can simple cells model complex neurodegenerative disease?
  • Location: Lecture Theatre 1, New Hunt's House, Guy's campus, London SE1 1UL
  • Speaker: Prof Lindquist

Biologist Prof Lindquist is a member of the Whitehead Institute, a Professor of Biology at MIT, and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator. She has also been awarded the highest scientific honour in the United States, the National Medal of Science.

She is a pioneer in the study of protein folding and has developed yeast strains that serve as living test tubes in which to study disorders, unravelling how protein folding contributes to them.

Protein misfolding has been implicated as a major mechanism in many severe neurological disorders including Parkinson’s and Huntington’s diseases. Prof Lindquist and her colleagues have succeeded in reproducing many of the biological consequences of Parkinson’s disease in yeast cells and are screening for drugs to prevent and treat the disease.
