"I really wanted to learn a trade, so when I was offered an apprenticeship by Guy's and St Thomas', it was ideal. I attended college and also learned my trade on the job over four years.
"I started as a mechanical fitter before becoming a team leader. I manage a team of 10 that maintains the mechanical plant and hospital services, such as heating and water. So there are a lot of prioritisation and organisational skills needed in my job.
"I like the diversity in the challenges I face every day. There is a wide variety of things to learn and I've always been encouraged to learn new skills and felt supported.
"In my current role, I have developed my management skills, including the personal or supportive side of management. I am able to make on-the-spot decisions, thinking quickly when it is needed.
"I like the benefits of working here and the people I work with. We have policies promoting fairness and the benefits here are good, such as the annual leave, flexible working and the bike to work scheme. The people make the job, though: I come across a lot of characters."
