This page explains the education workshops we offer to women being cared for by our midwifery team.

About the workshops

We offer a variety of workshops to help you both during and after your pregnancy. You can come to all of the workshops or just choose the ones that you are interested in. Your birth supporting partner or other relative/friend is welcome to attend the workshops with you.

Where are the workshops held?

Antenatal classes also known as workshops are held in the community according to your postcode. Once we receive your booking form we will book the classes and contact you directly with the dates and times of the classes in your area. If classes are not available for your postcode then they will be held in the antenatal education room on the 8th floor of St Thomas' Hospital. 

How can I book a workshop?

Please email antenataleducation@gstt.nhs.uk| with your name, address, hospital number, the date your baby is due and a telephone number or download our workshop booking form| (Word 59Kb) following your 20 week scan and return it to us at St Thomas'.

You usually attend around 32 - 36 weeks of your pregnancy unless otherwise stated in the workshop information below.

We will contact you by letter or telephone with the dates, time of day and place of your classes around 4 weeks before your classes start. If you have not heard from us by 34 weeks of your pregnancy please contact us on 020 7 188 6873 (voicemail). Please let us know as soon as possible if you change your address.

  • Signs of labour, stages of labour and coping strategies
  • Comfortable positions, basic massage, relaxation and the role of your birth partner

  • Induction of labour, assisted births with vacuum or forceps and Caesarean section

Breastfeeding Usually held on a Tuesday, 10am - 1pm

Parenting Usually held on a Tuesday, 2.30pm - 5pm
  • The parenting role

  • Emotional changes following childbirth, recovery and support

Physiotherapy antenatal class Two Fridays per month, 10.30am - 12.15pm. This is a workshop for women only A physiotherapist runs the workshop and offers advice about:
  • safe exercise in pregnancy
  • promotion of continence
  • care of your back
  • general aches of pregnancy
  • returning to fitness after birth.

Multiple pregnancies Approximately every six weeks on Fridays, 9.30am - 12.30pm This workshop focuses on the particular needs of women expecting more than one baby. We can usually arrange a visit to the neonatal unit| during the workshop.

Ideal time to attend:

Between 24 and 34 weeks of your pregnancy.

Virtual tour| of our maternity unit   We have a virtual tour| which enables you to view patient areas of our maternity unit. This includes photographs of where to access the hospital and photographs of the labour rooms, birthing pool, garden room, operating theatre and postnatal areas.

 

Talk on pain relief by one of our anaesthetists

Drop-in workshop held once a month on Tuesdays, 5pm - 6pm.

Online education from NHS Choices Pregancy information available on the NHS Choices website|    
Home birth workshop First Friday of every month, 6pm - 8pm in the antenatal education room, 8th floor, North Wing, St Thomas' Hospital Information is given by community midwives about birthing at home. No need to book this workshop and your birth partner is welcome to attend with you. You can attend at any time in your pregnancy.
