An electromyography, or EMG as it is often called, is a medical procedure for assessing the electrical activity of a patient’s muscles at rest and while contracting. EMG produces an audio or visual record called an electromyogram.
Nerve conduction studies (NCS) look at how well a patients nerves can transmit electrical signals. Nerves control the muscles in the body using electrical impulses, and these impulses make the muscles react in specific ways. Nerve and muscle disorders can cause the muscles to react in different ways.
The electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies (NCS) tests are used for the diagnosis of disorders of the muscles, neuromuscular junction and the peripheral nerves and nerve roots.
