Regional genetics clinics offer services to diagnose and assess the risk of individuals and families inheriting a genetic condition. It is not always possible to make a specific diagnosis for a family or child. However, a genetic assessment will help you to understand the possible diagnoses and treatment options.

If we are able to provide a diagnosis to patients and their families, we help them understand what causes it and the risks to relatives and future children.

Genetic information can have an impact on the wider family, and so genetic counselling is offered as part of our NHS service.

Our clinical genetics service was established by Professor Paul Polani in 1960 and now serves over 5 million people in South East London, Surrey, East and West Kent and East Sussex. Consultant geneticists (medical doctors who specialise in genetic conditions) specialist registrars and genetic counsellors work together to offer accurate information and support.
