Toxicology education
The Clinical Toxicology Service provides educational sessions to medical and nursing staff involved in the care of poisoned patients. Our structured outreach sessions are designed to provide information to staff working in the fields of acute medicine, emergency medicine, paediatrics and intensive care medicine.
Intensive 1 and 2 day courses are also provided at the Trust for both doctors and nurses and are advertised nationally. These courses consist of a combination of lectures and interactive case scenarios.
Training Opportunities in Clinical Toxicology
Training in Clinical Toxicology is available through attachments to the Clinical Toxicology Service, which are available for physicians from a variety of medical specialities, particularly emergency medicine, general medicine, clinical pharmacology, critical care and paediatrics.
Attachments are typically on a short-term basis of 1-4 weeks, although longer attachments can be organised in certain circumstances. These attachments are subject to availability and are unfunded, meaning that individuals will have to cover their own costs.
Educational opportunities during these attachments are provided through attendance at clinical toxicology ward rounds, with associated bedside teaching, and the medical toxicology clinic, participation in journal review sessions and 'in house' educational sessions, and having an active role in the current research interests of the service.
In addition specialist registrars interested in a more prolonged period of training in clinical toxicology may be able to get approval from their education supervisor and training committee for a six to twelve month training post with the Clinical Toxicology Service.
