Guy’s and St Thomas’ is very proud of staff who have been recognised in the New Year’s Honours list.

Dr David Fenton, consultant dermatologist – is awarded an MBE for services to the treatment of skin and hair disorders.

Dr Fenton’s work in hair and scalp disease through the hair clinic at St John’s Institute of Dermatology at St Thomas’ Hospital began 30 years ago as a research interest. He carried out the original research on topical Minoxidil – the first hair re-growth solution.

The hair clinic has since developed into the only dedicated national hair and scalp clinic in the UK, and recognises the importance not only of the physical symptoms, but also the emotional and psychological issues it has on patients and families. David works closely with support groups such as Alopecia UK and Changing Faces.

“I’m extremely flattered and humbled by the award, and I’m delighted that it has come about as a result of patient and support group nominations,” said Dr Fenton.

Dr Keith Ison, Head of Medical Physics – is awarded an OBE for leadership and development in healthcare science, medical physics, engineering and technology.

Dr Ison has been with the Trust since 2001, and is responsible for a wide range of medical physics and clinical engineering activities across the Trust – an area which helps clinicians assess and treat illness and disability, and also helps protect patients and healthcare workers from potential hazards, including radiation.

As well as being an honorary lecturer at King’s College London, Dr Ison is actively involved at national policy level with the education and training of scientific and technical staff in the NHS, and in setting national policy.

“It’s a lovely surprise, particularly because it comes with the support of many of my colleagues,” said Dr Ison.

Sir Ron Kerr, Chief Executive of Guy’s and St Thomas’, said: “The health sector is incredibly important to the UK and our society, as shown by a great proportion of the honours list being health-related. These honours are truly deserved by our staff who provide an excellent service to our patients and community every day.”

The honours list recognises the achievements and service of extraordinary people across the UK, and the majority of awards recognise contributions from people outside the public eye.
