Circus launch party

Children and teens with Type 1 diabetes were clowning around at the Diabetes UK Lewisham Lambeth and Southwark family support group launch on Saturday 9 February.

Originally set up in 2011 by local families and the Diabetes Modernisation Initiative, the group gives local Type 1 children and their families the chance to connect with others who are living with the condition.

Lily Johnston aged 12 from Southwark said:  “I meet other people with diabetes, share my experiences and listen to theirs.”

Liz, Lily’s Mum said: “Lily was diagnosed with diabetes aged three. The shock of coming to terms with blood tests and injections can be overwhelming. The group helps people realise that they are not alone.”

Type 1 diabetes develops when the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas are destroyed. It can develop at any age but typically appears in childhood. There is nothing you can do to prevent it and it is treated by insulin.
