Guy's and St Thomas' named as UK's first Robotic Surgery Institute

Guy’s and St Thomas’ and King’s College London have been named by the Vattikuti Foundation as the UK’s first Robotic Surgery Institute.

Guy’s and St Thomas’ carries out the most robotic surgery in the UK, around 400 cases a year. The majority are prostate operations, but also include bladder and kidney surgery.

The award is timely as the Government has this week published the UK’s first robotics strategy.

Victoria Borwick, Deputy Mayor of London, says: “London is home to some of the world's greatest universities and teaching hospitals and Guy’s and St Thomas’ and King’s College London are at the forefront of cutting-edge robotic surgery. Their treatments and research are leading to improved care for patients in fields such as paediatrics, gynaecology and plastic surgery.

“It is only three months since the Mayor launched MedCity, which aims to make London and the south east one of the leading life sciences clusters in the world, and it is great to know that Guy’s and St Thomas’ is spearheading the push when it comes to world class research and development.”

Professor Prokar Dasgupta, consultant urological surgeon at Guy’s and St Thomas’ and Chair of Robotic Surgery and Urological Innovation at King’s College London, says: “We have been pioneering robotic surgery in the UK for 10 years and the next 10 will be even more exciting. Robotic surgery has lots of advantages over traditional open surgery. The incisions are smaller so patients recover quicker and can go home sooner, and the risk of infection is lower.”

Dr Mahendra Bhandari, Chief Executive Officer of the Vattikuti Foundation, says: “Guy’s and St Thomas’ is the epicentre for urology robotic surgery in the UK, and has strong research and teaching programmes thanks to its links with King’s College London and the Urology Foundation.”
