The results of the national NHS Staff Survey (published today) show that 86% of staff at Guy’s and St Thomas’ feel “satisfied with the quality of work and patient care that they are able to deliver”. This is the highest score of any acute hospital trust in England and compares to a national average of 79%.

The survey results also show the Trust scored better than average for 21 out of the 28 key scores, and was in the top 20% for 15 of these measures.

Ann Macintyre, Director of Workforce, says: “I’m really pleased that for the fourth consecutive year we scored in the best 20% nationally for overall staff engagement. The results give us a useful insight into our employees’ experiences and an understanding of the areas to improve.”

The overall staff engagement score is based on three key findings: staff ability to contribute to improvement at work, staff recommendation of the Trust as a place to work or receive treatment, and staff motivation at work.

Our top three scores when benchmarked against other trusts were:

  • percentage of staff feeling satisfied with the quality of work and patient care they are able to deliver
  • staff recommendation of the trust as a place to work or receive treatment
  • percentage of staff reporting good communication between senior management and staff.

Although many positive scores from previous years were maintained there are some areas in which we need to improve. The Trust performed in the bottom 20% for:

  • percentage of staff having equality and diversity training in the last 12 months
  • percentage of staff experiencing discrimination at work in the last 12 months.

The national staff survey was undertaken throughout November and December 2013 and completed by a random sample of more than 400 Trust staff.

The Trust will use the survey results to make changes that will have a positive impact on staff and support them to provide the best possible care for patients.
