Jayne recognised as LGBT role model

Jayne King, Head of Security, was last night named as an LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and/or transgender) leader in the NHS, according to Health Service Journal magazine.

The HSJ’s inaugural list celebrates 25 role models across the NHS who identify as LGBT and who are:

• working to promote the inclusion of, and support for, the LGBT community
• helping to break down barriers
• effecting change through personal example, leadership or day-to-day excellence.

Jayne has worked in the NHS for 23 years, the last 13 of those at Guy’s and St Thomas’. She co-chairs the Guy’s and St Thomas’ LGBT staff forum with Eric Pirozzoli.

Her nomination entry said: “Jayne is an inspiring LGBT role model. She has long been a visible LGBT leader at the Trust. She has changed lives, although she is probably too modest to admit this.”

Jayne says: “If you can be your whole self at work then you make a better employee. Not everyone who is LGBT feels they are able to be out at work so the aim of the forum is to help the Trust create a welcoming environment. It also provides support and advice for people who feel the time is right for them to come out to colleagues.

“I’ve never had an issue at Guy’s and St Thomas’. I think people here are more open because of the diversity of our workforce, which includes people of all backgrounds, cultures, nationalities and religions, as well as sexuality.”

The staff forum shares best practice with other LGBT networks in the NHS. It also supports our LGBT patient forum, which helps the Trust understand and improve the experience of LGBT patients, their families and carers.
