Radiology patients benefit from room revamp

This week Guy’s and St Thomas’ unveiled a new, state-of the-art interventional radiology suite - Room 14 - where patients are already being treated.

Interventional radiology includes procedures like angioplasty, biopsy and stenting.

Previously this facility on the 1st floor of Lambeth Wing at St Thomas’ Hospital contained ageing equipment and staff could only treat a narrow range of patients, while its sister room carried out more complex procedures.

The Trust has invested £1.8 million to install new equipment and make it a much more pleasant place for patients to be treated.

Julie Hamilton, acting Head of Nursing, explains: “Having this new equipment will not only increase our efficiency and productivity but also enhance our patients’ experience while they undergo procedures.

“The room is more spacious and has a calming atmosphere. We also now have better waiting and changing facilities to improve patients’ privacy and dignity. We have already had positive comments from our patients about the improvements.”

General manager James Lowell says: “The room symbolises the Trust’s commitment to invest in new technologies and to always provide the best we can for the patients.

“We could have done a more basic job of just upgrading the equipment but improving the overall patient experience is always our priority.

“Thank you to everyone in the clinical and estates team for working so hard to ensure that Room 14 was finished on budget and on time!”
