Success for dietitians at national conference

Filomena Gomes (Specialist Research Dietitian) receives her BAPEN student award

Dietitians from Guy’s and St Thomas’ were recognised at the recent British Association of Enteral & Parenteral Nutrition (BAPEN) conference in Harrogate - more than 500 delegates attended this major national event.

Guy’s and St Thomas’ presented 7 out of the 60 posters at the conference - more than 10% of the total number of posters - with teams from critical care, oncology, head and neck, gastroenterology, nutrition team and the Lambeth & Southwark Action on Malnutrition (LAMP) project all represented.

Highlights of the conference included:

  • Danielle Bear (Principal Critical Care Dietitian) gave a keynote speech on the recently released CALORIES multi-centre trial, just published in the New England Journal of Medicine
  • Angela Reddy (Senior Specialist Chronic Respiratory Failure Dietitian) was awarded a poster of distinction for her work with feeding and outcomes in Duchenne muscular dystrophy
  • Rhys White (Principal Oncology Dietitian) won the PENG (Parenteral & Enteral Nutrition Group) award for best abstract on home parenteral nutrition
  • Filomena Gomes won the BAPEN student prize.

Scott Pendleton, Head of Nutrition and Dietetics, said: “This is an amazing achievement by the team. It exemplifies the vision that King’s Health Partners has as an academic health science centre to bring together clinical excellence and academic rigour to improve patient care.”
