To celebrate World Radiography Day 2014, staff at Guy’s and St Thomas’ and Evelina London Children’s Hospital are holding a series of events on Friday 7 November.

X-radiation (x-ray) was discovered by scientist Wilhelm Roentgen in 1895 and has been used to both diagnose and treat patients since World War One.

World Radiography Day highlights and celebrates the work and roles of radiographers within hospitals and medicine.

Kim Robertson, head of radiology services says: “Each year we have celebrated World Radiography Day in different ways. It is particularly poignant this year given the pioneering work in diagnostic radiography in the First World War. It is a field where technological advancement has revolutionised how we diagnose, treat and care for patients.

"It is a real privilege to be a diagnostic radiographer at Guy’s and St Thomas’, where we are able to work in an integrated way across patient pathways not only using the best technologies, but knowing the significant contribution this makes to our patients too."

From 10am–12 noon on Friday 7 November, senior radiographer, ‘Radiology Girl’ Georgina Charlton will be taking the followers of Evelina London’s Twitter feed on a ‘day in the life’ trip around our children’s hospital’s imaging department.  You can experience what it’s like to be a radiographer by following Evelina London on Twitter @EvelinaLondon and using the hashtag #radiologygirl.

Throughout the day, World Radiography Day information stands will be located at:

  • St Thomas’ Hospital - radiology and CT/MRI receptions on the 1st Floor of Lambeth Wing
  • Guy’s Hospital - main reception and imaging reception on the 3rd Floor of Tower Wing
  • Evelina London Children’s Hospital – Arctic reception, 1st floor

A bake sale in aid of Guy’s Cancer Centre Appeal will be held from 10am on the ground floor of Lambeth Wing at St Thomas’.
