A new health and leisure centre in West Norwood was officially opened on Friday 5 December by local MP Tessa Jowell.

The £14.2 million West Norwood Health and Leisure Centre gives local people the chance to get fit and receive expert health advice in the same place.

Services include a GP surgery, a dental school run by King’s College London, Lambeth Council’s customer service centre, a gym and a 25-metre swimming pool.

Guy’s and St Thomas’ staff provide a range of services including stop smoking advice, speech and language therapy, child health clinics and NHS Health Checks to help local people reduce their risk of conditions like stroke and heart disease.

Angela Dawe, Director of Operations and Strategic Development - Adult Local Services, says: “West Norwood Health and Leisure Centre is an innovative new build that brings together health and leisure facilities on one site. Our vision is that the centre will soon become a healthy lifestyle hub for people with long term conditions such as diabetes.

“This is an exciting project to improve the overall health and wellbeing of local people. We’re looking forward to working with the leisure teams to encourage local people to get active and lead a healthier lifestyle.”

West Norwood Health and Leisure Centre was shortlisted for a Health Service Journal Award for improved partnership between health and local government.
