NHS Sustainability Awards 2015

Guy’s and St Thomas’ has been recognised as one of the most sustainable health service organisations in the country after winning two categories of the NHS Sustainability Awards 2015.

This prestigious national awards scheme celebrates the achievements of NHS trusts in reducing their environmental impact. This year’s awards were presented by the gardener and broadcaster Monty Don at an event in central London.

Guy’s and St Thomas’ was declared the winner of the awards for water and procurement sustainability, while also being highly commended in other categories for minimising waste and promoting energy efficiency.

Alexandra Hammond, Associate Director for Sustainability, says: “We’re thrilled to have won these awards. It is testament to the dedication of the team and the commitment of the Trust.

“Sustainability is hugely important for the NHS. Reducing waste and being as efficient as possible with our resources is of course good for the environment, but it also benefits patient care. There is a lot of excellent sustainability work happening in the health service and it’s really exciting to be leading the way.”

The judges of the Awards were highly impressed by the Trust’s innovative water saving programme - a partnership with the water efficiency experts ADSM that has reduced water consumption by nearly 20% and saved £120,000. A donation from this saving will be made to the charity WaterAid to provide safe water and sanitation in Nepal.

The Trust was also recognised for pioneering leadership in purchasing medical equipment ethically. Through working in partnership with suppliers, the Trust has helped to improve their environmental and workplace standards.
