Claira Hermet, urban challenge

A fearless BBC Radio 1Xtra and BT Sport presenter is preparing to race to the top of the world’s tallest hospital building to raise funds for the new Cancer Centre at Guy’s Hospital.

Claira Hermet is encouraging others to join her as she takes on the Guy’s Urban Challenge, a 2.4km run, 15km static cycle and 29 floor stair climb up Guy’s Tower.

Having lost her mother and sister to breast cancer, and discovering she had a high chance of developing the disease herself, Claira took the brave decision to have a double mastectomy at Guy’s earlier this year.

She says: “Breast cancer has affected my whole life. Until my mastectomy it had always had a negative effect but now it has ended with something very positive.

“I want people to sign up for the Urban Challenge to share this positivity and rally together to achieve their goals and make sure Guy’s and St Thomas’ can keep providing the best care for cancer patients in years to come.”

When the new Cancer Centre opens at Guy’s in 2016 it will bring the most treatment and research together under one roof, treating 20,000 suspected cancer cases and 6,500 cancer patients each year.

The Guy’s Urban Challenge takes place on Friday 9 and Saturday 10 October. “We still need to raise £9.3 million for the Cancer Centre, which is a whole lot of money – we need to get more people involved and donating,” says Claira.

Places are still available for Saturday 10October and volunteers are needed to help on both dates. You can sign up to compete or volunteer here.
