A pioneering midwife who specialises in the treatment of female genital mutilation (FGM) has been named King’s College London’s Alumnus of the Year.

Comfort Momoh, FGM and public health specialist at Guy’s and St Thomas’, has been treating women affected by FGM for more than 25 years and established one of the UK’s first FGM clinics at Guy’s Hospital in 1997.

She received her accolade at the King’s Awards 2015. This is an annual celebration of graduates of the university which recognises those who have made outstanding contributions to society.

Comfort, who was presented with her award by Professor Edward Byrne, President and Principal of King’s College London, says: “I’d like to thank King’s College for their recognition of my work, I am so proud to be part of the university. It is a great honour to be named among so many other talented and outstanding recipients.

“I am so grateful for the support and the continued encouragement of my work from King’s College.  As we all know, safeguarding children and adults is everyone’s business. This award will go a long way to support women, girls and their families, encouraging changes in attitudes and mindset.”

The Alumnus of the Year award recognises the exemplary contribution of a member of the King’s community to the university, society or to the alumni body.
