Local MP Simon Hughes visited the construction site of the new Cancer Centre at Guy's Hospital on Friday (23 January).

Mr Hughes, MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark, was able to assess progress in the building of this state-of-the-art facility which will bring together most cancer treatment under one roof when it opens to patients next year.

He said: “It’s encouraging to see the Cancer Centre progressing on time and on budget. The information I received during my visits confirms that the new Cancer Centre at Guy’s will be everything Guy’s and St Thomas’, King’s College London and the community wants.

“You can’t have the best of British healthcare without buildings which are fit for purpose, and for this you need good contractors, suppliers, project management and apprentices. Through a good collective team effort everyone can contribute to improving the patient experience.

“It’s very clear that, sadly, huge numbers of people will suffer from cancer in England in the future and the earlier we can intervene the earlier we help in the battle against cancer. The new Cancer Centre at Guy’s will be a beacon for London and the south east of England.

“The construction of the new Cancer Centre at Guy’s relies on the good relationships between all of those involved. A very encouraging thing about the Cancer Centre is that it’s being delivered by an in-house provider – Essentia, part of Guy’s and St Thomas’ – working with an international company, Laing O'Rourke, and both of them have a solid commitment to recruit from the local community."

A drop-in event for local people, patients and staff to find out about latest progress on the new Cancer Centre is being held on Thursday 5 February from 5pm-7pm in the Robens Suite, 29th floor, Tower Wing, Guy’s Hospital – all welcome.
