Award success for wound care nurse

A nurse has been recognised for helping to heal severe wounds faster by using a new treatment method.

Luxmi Mohamud, a tissue viability nurse based at Dulwich Hospital, won the Journal of Wound Care’s award for best clinical research.

Luxmi uses an oxygen-based spray to increase the amount of oxygen that gets to wounds, helping them to heal quicker.

Luxmi says: "Winning this award is a real boost. My happiness lies in achieving healing in challenging wounds and making a difference to our patients’ lives.

“I've seen some fantastic results from the oxygen spray. It can speed up healing in wounds that have failed to heal despite standard care.

"I've had patients who are now able to wear clothing such as shorts after years of keeping their legs covered because of their wounds."

Guy’s and St Thomas’ tissue viability nurses see patients in their own homes, at health centres and in our hospitals. They provide advice and education on caring for wounds and avoiding pressure ulcers (bed sores).
