New mothers on the postnatal ward at St Thomas’ Hospital have given the thumbs up to open visiting hours that allow partners to stay the night.

After a 12 month trial, 100% of new mums agree that it is beneficial for their chosen partner to be able to stay overnight, helping to look after them and bond with new arrivals.

More than 400 partners have spent the night on the postnatal ward each month since the trial launched in June 2014, instead of having to leave at 8pm when visiting hours used to finish.

Manjit Roseghini, matron on the postnatal ward, says: “We’re so pleased our overnight visiting hours have been beneficial to our women because we started the trial following feedback from new mums.

“As we enter our second year, we’re now looking into how we can provide more facilities for partners so that they can be as comfortable as possible when they stay overnight.”

Sachin Pattani, from north London, was one of the first partners to stay overnight when his wife Uzma gave birth to baby Leeya in June 2014.

He says: “I felt really lucky to have the option to stay all night and support my wife. I think it’s crucial for partners to be able to stay and get the hands-on experience they need to help their partner at what can be a daunting time.”

Lynne Pacanowski, Director of Midwifery at Guy’s and St Thomas’, says: “This extra time spent with mum and baby can help family bonding and reduce anxiety and stress. I’m delighted that this initiative has been a success and will continue to enhance the care we provide.”
