Two projects to improve the way we care for patients have been highly commended in the prestigious Building Better Healthcare Awards.

The first project is the development of a new portal, KHP Online, which allows clinicians from King’s College Hospital, South London and Maudsley, and Guy’s and St Thomas’ to share patient information securely and quickly.

These three trusts regularly work together as part of King’s Health Partners. Guy’s and St Thomas’ provided the technical expertise to support the development of the portal.

The judges said: “This is a really good idea. It enables the sharing of a lot of information that is vital for good joined-up care. It is high time that diagnostic test results were shared to avoid silly duplication and there is good evidence of cost savings and rapid return on investment.”

The second project is the refurbishment of Guy’s Tower, the tallest hospital building in the world. This involved replacing every window, repairing damaged concrete and applying 8,000m² of bespoke aluminium cladding to the outside of the 34-storey landmark building. One of the key aims of the project was to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.

Judges praised the refurbishment project for its ‘highly innovative approach’ that enabled work to continue without disrupting a single appointment. The judges added: “They were originally going to knock down the existing tower block and instead decided to reclad it. The figures are extraordinary and show what savings can be made, both financially and in terms of the environmental impact of a development.”

Both projects were led by Essentia, Guy’s and St Thomas’ capital, estates, facilities and IT directorate.

Steve McGuire, Director of Essentia, says: “Innovative projects like these help us to improve the care that we provide for patients. We’re very proud that our work has been recognised by these awards.”
