Guy’s Tower shortlisted for Prime Minister’s Award

The revamp of Guy’s Tower to make it fit for the 21st century is in the running to win the Prime Minister’s Better Public Building Award

This prestigious accolade recognises publicly funded construction projects that are completed on time, on budget and bring real change to their local community.

The winner will be announced at the British Construction Industry Awards on 14 October for which the refurbishment of Guy’s Tower – the world’s tallest hospital building – has already been shortlisted.

Refurbishing Guy’s Tower involved replacing every window, repairing damaged concrete, and applying 8,000m² of bespoke aluminium cladding to the outside of the 34-storey landmark building. Key aims also included improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions.

The project was led by Essentia, Guy’s and St Thomas’ in-house infrastructure provider.

Steve McGuire, Director of Essentia, says: “I feel an enormous sense of pride at what we’ve achieved here. We’ve secured the future of the Tower, a building that will benefit patients, staff and London for the next generation. To now be shortlisted for the Prime Minister’s Better Public Building Award is a great achievement.”

The Guy’s Tower project has been recognised in a number of other award schemes:

  • commended in the 2degrees Champions Awards earlier this year
  • shortlisted for the London Civil Engineering Awards, also earlier this year
  • shortlisted for the Building Better Healthcare Awards 2015 – winners to be announced on 4 November.
