Abseiling 86-year-old is a fearless fundraiser for Guy's Cancer Centre

An intrepid 86-year-old former nurse has abseiled down Guy’s Cancer Centre to help fundraise for state-of-the-art patient facilities.  

Pam Miller, who trained as a nurse at Guy’s Hospital from 1948 to 1952 and whose grandson was born at the hospital, raised more than £1,000 for Guy’s Cancer Centre Appeal.

Pam was one of 95 courageous fundraisers who abseiled 150 feet down the side of the new Guy’s Cancer Centre on Saturday 4 June. A total of £35,000 in sponsorship was raised and will be spent on providing Guy’s and St Thomas’ cancer patients with the best possible support and surroundings. 

Guy’s Cancer Centre is due to open to patients in the autumn and will be one of the largest in Europe. The new centre will use the latest technology to treat around 6,500 cancer patients each year. It will host most of Guy’s and St Thomas’ cancer treatment, meaning that patients can be provided with seamless care in one location.

Pam, who lives in Walsingham in Norfolk, says: “I was determined to do my bit to support the new Cancer Centre at Guy’s Hospital. I’ve always loved Guy’s and it sounds like a brilliant project, putting cancer services under one roof with state-of-the-art facilities.

“The abseil was good fun and I really enjoyed it. I was never scared at all. My family were there to support me and as I abseiled down the building I could hear them all shouting ‘Go Grandma go!’”
