Health Service Journal (HSJ) Value Awards 2018

Guy’s and St Thomas’ staff have been shortlisted for the prestigious Health Service Journal (HSJ) Value Awards, which recognises “outstanding efficiency and improvement by the NHS”.

The South East London Neuro Navigation Service has been shortlisted in the Specialist Services category. It is an innovative model that supports people with brain injuries and neurological disorders to move smoothly from hospital, to specialist neuro-rehabilitation unit and then home.

The neuro navigation role was developed to reduce delays in hospitals and specialist units and to improve patient experience and safety. The small team work across the six boroughs of Lambeth, Southwark, Lewisham, Greenwich, Bexley and Bromley.

The Sustainable Actions delivering Valuable Efficiencies (SAVE) project has been shortlisted in the Improving the value of NHS support services category. The project encourages support staff at the Trust to make suggestions to improve efficiency at work and reduce its carbon footprint. The SAVE project will have saved the Trust £160,000 by April 2018.

The Psycho-Oncology Support Team at Dimbleby Cancer Care have been shortlisted in the Specialist Services category for a pilot scheme that has reduced the number of missed first appointments and halved the waiting time between referral and first appointment. This has been achieved by inviting cancer patients and carers to be proactive and confirm from the outset that they wish to receive psychological therapy.

The team is made up of counsellors, psychotherapists, psychologists and psychiatrists who provide specialist one-to-one and group therapy for patients and families affected by cancer. The service receives more than 2000 referrals every year.

Winners will be announced at a ceremony on 7 June.
