Overview

Dental pathology

Pathology is the study of disease, with around 800 million diagnostic tests carried out each year in the UK.

We work with doctors and clinicians to diagnose, treat and prevent illnesses of the mouth including:

  • mouth cancer
  • odontogenic tumours and other lesions of the mouth
  • pre-malignant lesions
  • lesions of the ear, nose and throat (including thyroid, parathyroid and larynx)
  • salivary gland tumours

We provide a full range of diagnostic services including:

  • routine histology
  • special stains
  • frozen sections
  • immunohistochemistry
  • DNA image-based ploidy analysis
  • ground sections of bone and teeth (this technique is not included in the UKAS scope of accreditation for this laboratory)

A team of consultant staff lead our laboratory and take part in the National External Quality Assurance Scheme for Head and Neck Pathology. 3 of our consultants are General Dental Council registered specialists in oral and maxillofacial pathology.

We provide specialised head and neck cancer reporting to the South East London Cancer Network. A postal biopsy service is available to general dental practitioners.
