Coronavirus: children's dermatology update

In response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, please read our advice and information before attending the service.

Location

How do I get an appointment?

Your child will need to be referred by their GP or another hospital doctor.

  • Changing or cancelling your appointment

    If you need to change or cancel your child's first appointment, please call 020 7188 3000.

    If you need to change or cancel a follow up appointment, please call 020 7188 6393.

    Please contact us as soon as possible so that we can offer your appointment to another patient. 

  • Before your appointment

    Please bring a list of any current medications your child is taking or creams they are using. Please include prescription medication, medicines you have bought yourself and any alternative medicines, for example herbal remedies.

    If you have been treated at another hospital for the same (or any related) condition, please bring any copies of correspondence or investigations with you.

  • What to expect at your appointment

    We make every effort to see you on time, but delays sometimes happen so please do allow plenty of time.

    You will be seen by a member of our team. We will take a full medical history and, to assess your child's skin problem properly, they may be asked to undress so that all of the skin (and not just the area(s) affected) can be examined. 

    Your child may also need to have:

    • a blood test
    • skin sampling (taking a swab or scraping to look for skin infections)
    • skin biopsy (taking a small piece of skin under local anaesthetic).

    As this is a teaching hospital, students supervised by qualified staff might be involved in your care. It is valuable training for students and does not affect the quality of your treatment in any way, but please tell us if you do not want them to be present or involved. We will always respect your wishes.

  • After your appointment

    If your nurse or doctor decides that treatment is necessary, we will send a letter to your GP explaining which medicines your child needs prescribed.

    Medicines are only dispensed from our hospital outpatient pharmacy if they are needed urgently or cannot be prescribed by your GP.

Eczema education

Our eczema education programme is a course for parents of children with eczema. The course lasts for three hours and is delivered once a week. It teaches you what eczema is, the triggers, how to recognise infection and demonstrates prescribed treatments. The course is available to our patients and those living in Lambeth (via your GP).

Severe Paediatric Eczema Service

We run a national tertiary service for paediatric patients with severe atopic eczema that requires systemic immuno-modulatory therapy, such as methotrexate, ciclosporin, or biologics (dupilumab is now available for patients over 12 years who have failed conventional treatment).

In addition to the Paediatric Dermatology team, the service includes a Paediatric Clinical Psychologist, as the burden of psychological co-morbidities, such as anxiety and depression, is high in this patient group. The Paediatric Allergy team also provides diagnostic and clinical input for patients with food and respiratory allergies. Patients also benefit from direct access to our research programme on novel therapeutics in severe atopic eczema led by Professor Carsten Flohr.
