Coronavirus: Lane Fox Unit update

Shielding advice

Guidance for all Lane Fox patients at Guy's and St Thomas' regarding coronavirus (COVID-19)

  • If you are not infected

    • Stay at home
    • Maintain social distancing, recommended on the gov.uk website (keep a distance of 2 metres between you and other people)
    • Patients with chronic respiratory failure (on ventilator support for a muscle and nerve condition or COPD) should start shielding as advised on gov.uk
    • If you are shielding and require additional support, please apply on gov.uk
    • Patients who are required to engage in shielding will be contacted by NHS England. The letter received can be sent to employers or other agencies as proof that you need to shield
    • If you use a rescue pack ensure it is available and in-date
    • Practise good home hygiene such as hand washing, cleaning surfaces with detergent, avoid hand to mouth contact, ensure your carers sneeze and cough into hand or tissues
    • Make sure people visiting and carers are free from symptoms
    • Strengthen care network if possible such as having a backup for your main carer if they are unwell
  • If you are infected

    • Self-isolate
    • Self-management at home – if possible avoid hospital admission
    • Inform your GP and the Lane Fox Unit
    • Increase your fluid intake
    • Take paracetmaol (dose adjusted)
    • Practise good home hygiene such as hand washing, cleaning surfaces with detergent, avoid hand to mouth contact, ensure your carers sneeze and cough into hand or tissues
    • Make sure your carers wear standard personal protective equipment (apron, gloves, surgical mask) for all close personal care
    • If you are deteriorating and needing additional support which cannot be delivered at home, get an assessment for admission to local hospital
    • The Lane Fox Unit team will provide advice and support to your local hospital (there will not be availability of a direct Lane Fox Unit admission or transfer)
