About us

Our women's and men's health service provides specialist physiotherapy care for men and women with bladder, bowel and pelvic floor muscle related disorders.

Conditions treated

We treat a number of conditions including incontinence, birth-related pelvic floor conditions, chronic pelvic pain and antenatal and postnatal lower back and pelvic pain.

For a list of conditions we treat, please see the referrals page.

Exercise classes

We offer a number of exercise classes for women undergoing treatment with our physiotherapists.

  • Antenatal pelvic girdle pain advice group

This class is for patients with antenatal pelvic girdle pain, where you will be given advice on how to best manage your symptoms, including exercise.

If, after attending the class you have no improvement, we ask you to contact the department for a one-to-one appointment with a physiotherapist.

  • Women’s health dynamic control group

This class is for women who have back and pelvic pain during pregnancy and the first six weeks after birth (the postpartum period).

It helps you to increase fitness levels to return to the normal activities of daily life as soon as possible and is run over six weeks.

  • Antenatal education class

This class is designed to inform you regarding how to exercise safely during pregnancy, the importance of pelvic floor exercises and how to do them and how to look after you back so you don’t develop back and pelvic pain during pregnancy.

We also offer you information regarding foetal positioning and perineal massage.

You can refer yourself to this class by calling 020 7188 5084.

  • Women’s health hydrotherapy class

This class is for women who have back and pelvic pain during pregnancy.

It aims to help you with daily activities, sleep patterns and pain, to help you cope with your condition and enjoy your pregnancy.

You will be referred to this class after an assessment by your physiotherapist. Occasionally we may need to liaise with your obstetric consultant.

Inpatient services

Our physiotherapy team will look after you on the wards if you have been admitted following the birth of your baby or if you have had pelvic floor and gynaecological surgery.

We work closely with the midwifery, obstetric and gynaecological medical teams.

Treatment includes advice on exercises that you can do to speed up your recovery, advice on lifting and driving and the chance to speak with our specialist team regarding any women’s health concerns.

While you are on the ward you may expect a visit from our team between 8.30am-12 noon.

We also offer a caesarean class on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 9.30am-10am, on the postnatal ward. You can attend this class while staying in hospital. Your physiotherapy and the midwifery teams will give you more information.
