Our service, and in particular the emergency floor, has benefitted from significant investment as part of a wide scale rebuilding programme, which will see the creation of one large emergency floor, including the emergency department and the acute admission ward.
In March 2016, the emergency department was given a rating of 'outstanding' from the Care Quality Commission, and acute medicine was rated as 'good'.
Within the stroke unit, we also achieved an ‘A’ star rating in the Sentinel Stroke National Audit Programme.

In our team, no two days are the same. We will teach you skills like holistic caring for our vulnerable elderly patients, which will be helpful wherever your nursing career takes you in the future.
You will be supported on every shift by senior nurses, who will help to develop your confidence and leadership skills.
We can offer a unique two-year rotation programme for experienced staff, enabling you to spend six months in four different areas. We also offer rotations for newly-qualified staff to help you to gain a variety of experiences and develop specialist clinical skills and knowledge.

Guy’s and St Thomas’ was a pilot site for the introduction of revalidation for nurses. Already ahead of most trusts in managing revalidation, we offer outstanding support throughout the process with regular personal developmental reviews and individualised objectives to support professional and personal development.
Training and development
We champion mentorship on our wards and support all staff in gaining a mentorship qualification. We are committed to supporting staff development and offer multiple training opportunities including:
- corporate and nursing specific induction programmes as well as ongoing local induction
- support for newly-qualified staff through the Trust’s preceptorship programme and the practice development nurses
- a dedicated practice development team who run study days, offer career development advice and can work with you one-to-one on the wards
- development days where our specialist nurses will work with you to develop bespoke competencies for areas such as heart failure, ECG, tracheostomy, pain, diabetes and palliative care/end of life
- access to in-house training, development and support as well as opportunities to undertake university accredited modules to further your professional development.
