Developing performance as managers and educators

Each course aims to provide participants with a framework upon which they can develop practical, professional skills that will make a difference to their performance as managers and educators.

GP update in hot topics in clinical practice

Hot topics in clinical practice aims to provide the general practitioner with a concise overview of current practice for treatment and management of common referrals. This four and a half day long course will cover a range of conditions treated by our specialists.

Topics covered include:

  • common GUM disorders and what can be done in primary care
  • wheezing in children <1yr, >1yr
  • hormone replacement therapy, menopause
  • management of ovarian cysts
  • the watery eye, eye lid lump and bumps
  • scalp lesions and hair loss
  • memory service which focuses on early intervention and diagnosis of dementia
  • child constipation
  • melanoma
  • PCOS and its metabolic consequences

This is the perfect way to address your PDP needs as well as refreshing your enthusiasm for general practice amongst like-minded colleagues.

Clinical supervision and assessment course

A one day course for consultants covering teaching in clinical situations, large and small groups, and the workplace based assessments. During the course participants will:

  • discuss best practice in supervising trainees in different clinical settings
  • plan a formal teaching session: set aims and objectives, and determine appropriate teaching, learning and assessment methods.
  • differentiate between the main workplace-based assessments and consider how to use them effectively
  • discuss strategies to address current concerns and challenges
  • undertake a short teaching session and receive constructive feedback
  • observe other colleagues’ teaching styles

This course is mandatory for all Trust consultants (unless they have done equivalent training elsewhere in the last 3 years). It replaces the former ‘Teaching the Teachers’ and ‘Clinical Supervision’ courses (past participants need not repeat).

This course meets the London Deanery supervisor requirements for domains 1-4 and 7 (those required of clinical supervisors).

Clinical supervisors ‘refresher’: the teaching observation tool

A one day course for supervisors to assess and develop the teaching skills of trainee doctors using the new observation tool. The course will:

  • review the criteria for effective teaching
  • discuss techniques for identifying good practice and areas for development

  • Thursday 27 June 2013, Sherman Education Centre

This course meets the London Deanery supervisor requirements for domains 4 and 7.

Educational supervision and dealing with trainees in difficulty

A one day course for current educational supervisors who have not had previous training in the role.

It addresses:

  • The roles and requirements of the educational supervisor
  • How to run an effective educational supervision meeting
  • Working with portfolios
  • A structure for careers guidance
  • How to manage trainees in difficulty and difficult trainees

This course meets the London Deanery supervisor requirements for domains 5-7 (those required of named clinical and educational supervisors).

Developing teaching skills

This course is designed for medical/clinical teachers who may have experience of teaching but who have had little or no formal training for this role. By the end of the day, participants will have gained the knowledge and skills to enable them to:

  • demonstrate an understanding of how adults learn
  • support and facilitate individual students and trainees to learn in the clinical environment
  • make appropriate preparation for teaching
  • undertake a presentation or teaching session to a small group, using a variety of teaching materials
  • demonstrate a learner-centred approach

Leadership training for higher level trainees, SpRs and new consultants (previously known as management for specialist registrars (SpRs)

This course is for specialists who are preparing to apply for a consultant position. Using a combination of lectures, group discussions and e-learning, the course objective is to equip doctors in training to meet the leadership challenges they will encounter. The lessons are reinforced by nine e-learning modules.

Topics covered:

  • business planning
  • meetings and time management
  • negotiating skills
  • how trusts are managed
  • presentation and interview skills

The course is held over 2 days and runs 2 times a year. Participants get access to a newly produced e-learning programme.
