The project to reclad East Wing at St Thomas’ Hospital has won the Award for Sustainable Development at the prestigious Building Better Healthcare Awards.

Anne Marie Watts, Head of Sterile Services at Guy’s and St Thomas’, attended the awards ceremony in London on 2 November to accept the award on behalf of the Trust.

Earlier this year the East Wing project – managed by Essentia, Guy’s and St Thomas’ estates, facilities, capital development and IT directorate – won the Best Design for Conversion or Infill category of the European Healthcare Design Awards and was highly commended in the Health Service Journal Value in Healthcare Awards.

An innovative and sustainable solution has encased the 13-storey tower in a glazed façade, weatherproofing it and improving energy efficiency.

A key benefit is the addition of two new lifts for critically ill patients who need to be transferred from the Emergency Department (A&E) to the intensive care units and inpatient wards in East Wing.

The interior of the building now includes two airy and light glass atria, which contain eye-catching artwork by Tsai & Yoshikawa to improve the hospital environment for patients, visitors and staff.

The challenge of the East Wing project was to carry out the work without disruption to clinical services, which include two intensive care units and 200 inpatient beds.

Steve McGuire, Director of Essentia, says: “The rationale for the East Wing project was simple – the building was leaking, it wasn’t energy efficient, and the lifts to take patients from A&E to intensive care and wards were not fit for purpose, and so a complete overhaul was needed.

“Improving our infrastructure without disrupting patient care is a key priority and we are very proud that the East Wing project was completed without cancelling any appointments or treatment.”

The East Wing project was managed by Essentia and delivered by a team including lead building contractor ISG, architects Hopkins Architects, engineering consultants Arup, project managers Mace, and artists Tsai & Yoshikawa.

  • A pioneering new app, which enables healthcare professionals to identify people at risk of inherited cancer and refer them for potentially life-saving specialist treatment, was a finalist in the Best Healthcare App category of the Building Better Healthcare Awards. Cancer Genetics has been developed by the Clinical Genetics team at Guy’s and St Thomas’ with technology company UBQO.
