Rapid access chest pain clinic

Referrals

Making a referral

We accept referrals from GPs in Lambeth and Southwark.

We accept referrals from outside these areas in some special circumstances.

Patients attending the emergency department (A&E) may be referred to us for an outpatient review if they have:

  • typical angina symptoms
  • typical risk factors
  • a normal ECG
  • negative Troponin

GP referrals

All NHS GP referrals must be submitted using the NHS e-Referral Service (e-RS). Referrals sent by email or post from NHS GPs will not be processed.

Please complete the rapid access chest pain clinic referral form in as much detail as possible to avoid rejection or delays.

If you need advice about a patient, please use the advice and guidance on e-RS.

Please give your patient a clinic information sheet letting them know that we'll contact them with an appointment within 2 working days.

We'll phone your patient to offer the first available appointment within 2 weeks of receiving the referral. For confidentiality reasons we'll leave a short message asking them to contact us.

We'll provide your patient with the information they need over the phone and we'll send a letter to the patient by post.

Referral criteria

We accept referrals for:

  • people with blood pressure below 180mmHg systolic and 90mmHg diastolic
  • people with exertional chest pain that suggests new onset angina within the last 2 months
  • people with pain that suggests cardiac ischaemia or has some atypical features but is accompanied by significant cardiac risk

We only accept referrals for women under 40 and men under 30 in exceptional circumstances.
