How do I get an appointment?
You must have a referral from your GP or health/social care professional. Alternatively, you may self-refer.
-
Cancelling or changing your appointment
Please call the relevant team using the numbers at the top of this page.
-
Before your appointment
Please bring any hospital discharge reports or other correspondence from health and social care professionals to your appointment. Please also let us know:
- any future hospital appointments that you might have
- details of any past operations and illnesses that you have had
- what medications you are currently taking.
-
What to expect at your appointment
You will be assessed by a therapist, either in your home, at a clinic, or on a ward. The therapist will work with you to develop a treatment plan based on your individual needs and goals.
Assessments vary according to your individual needs, but usually take around an hour to an hour and a half.
We might ask you to remove some items of clothing and/or your shoes so that we can examine you properly.
As this is a teaching hospital, students supervised by qualified staff might be involved in your care. It is valuable training for students and does not affect the quality of your treatment in any way, but please tell us if you do not want them to be present or involved. We will always respect your wishes.

After your apppointment
Follow up appointments are usually carried out in your home, or a gym or ward. They can take up to 20 minutes to an hour, depending on individual needs.
If you are an outpatient, we will give you a follow up appointment card. If you are an inpatient on a ward, we will see you during your allocated time slot, which will be based according to your rehabilitation needs.
We will produce a discharge report summarising your assessment and treatment, which is sent to both you and your GP.
If you have any concerns or problems out of hours, please contact your therapist (they will provide you with their contact details at the first appointment). Alternatively, you can contact the main numbers for Lambeth and Southwark at the top of this page.
