Jan Schumacher

Consultant anaesthetist

Biography

Jan Schumacher was appointed in 2004 as a consultant anaesthetist at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. 

He sits on committees for the British Standards Institution and the International Organization for Standardization.

He has been an examiner for the European Diploma of Anaesthesia. 

He was the research and development lead for anaesthesia at Guy's and St Thomas'. 

Education and training

Jan started his medical training at the University of Hamburg and later at Charing Cross Medical School, London.

His interest in research began in 1993 whilst training at Chelsea and Westminster Hospitals, London.

He also trained at United Medical and Dental Schools (UMDS) of Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals and at the Royal Brompton in 1997.

Research interests

  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) for medical first responders and receivers
  • Quality improvement
  • Professional standards
  • Chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear defence and resuscitation in hazardous environments

Since the London Bombings in 2005 his research focussed on personal protective equipment for medical first responders and receivers. He established research collaborations with the London Ambulance Service, Royal Navy, United States Air Force, Department of Health, and the British Standards Institute.
