Consultant nephrologist
Biography
DavidFurmedge spent 3 years as a clinical lecturer in renal medicine at Imperial College London, Hammersmith Hospital before being appointed as a consultant at Guy's Hospital in 2009.
He is an honorary senior lecturer at King’s College London and has been the Clinical Lead for Nephrology at Guy’s Hospital since 2015. He enjoys teaching at all levels and is an Educational Supervisor to medical students and doctors in training.
Education and training
- General medical and specialist renal training on the North Thames rotation
- PhD in transplant immunology at Imperial College London, Hammersmith Hospital
- Junior doctor training at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh
- Graduated in medical sciences (pharmacology) from Cambridge University
- Studied clinical medicine at Oxford University
Research interests
- Transplant immunology: David’s PhD examined how the body’s immune system responds to transplanted cells and tissues. This included defining a population of cells which can suppress the immune response. More recently this was developed into a multinational trial where these regulatory cells were expanded in the laboratory and infused into patients post-transplant. To follow up from this work, David is a co-investigator in 'gamechanger': regulatory t cells in highly sensitised patients to improve outcomes after hla-ab incompatiblerenal transplantation
- Rare diseases: David is the local Principal Investigator for RaDaR, the national registry for rare renal diseases

Principal investigator for the national (NIHR) bioresource for cystinosis
Awards
- Several investigator awards during his research and was awarded “Guy’s teacher of the year” by the junior doctors
