The Diabetes & Endocrinology Day Centre operate on both sites providing a service to people with diabetes and endocrine conditions plus lipid disorders and obesity with a research team integrated in the department. All services work very closely with our local primary care services.
Specialist Diabetes Services
In addition to clinics at sites in Guys and St Thomas sites there are also specialist community based diabetes specialist clinics. All our clinics have at the Point-of-Care blood glucose testing.
Clinic are multi-disciplinary including doctors, nurses, dieticians, podiatrists and psychotherapists. The specialist services we provide include;
- Multi-disciplinary Rapid Access Clinic for all new referrals
- Single Point Access for community referrals
- Type 1 diabetes review
- Intensive Type 1 Management
- Continuous Subcutaneous Insulin Infusion (Insulin pump therapy)
- Combined renal/diabetes
- Combined vascular/diabetes in conjunction with the vascular team and podiatry
- Pre-conception clinic for women with diabetes (Type 1 and Type 2) planning pregnancy
- During pregnancy, for women with diabetes an integrated antenatal and post natal service with Women’s Health
- Young Persons and Transition Clinic
- Extensive patient education/self management programmes (e.g DAFNE & DESMOND)
Referrals
In-patients with diabetes or endocrine problems can be referred to the medical teams on both sites (STH bleep 1801, Guys bleep 0140). There is an on-call registrar (non-resident in the hospital) able to give advice and see urgent referrals for medical and nursing staff throughout the Trust, and to give advice to patients and GPs.
All GP referrals must be submitted using the NHS e-Referral service (formerly Choose and Book).
Referrals sent to the nhs.net mailbox or by post from GPs will not be processed.

Southwark Community Diabetes
The service works closely with GPs and Practice nurses providing advice on diabetes management.
There are two intermediate care clinics per week one at Dulwich Community Hospital and one at Artesian Health Centre
Referrals are via Southwark single point referral and should be sent to gst-tr.southwark-diabetes@nhs.net
Endocrinology
The endocrine service covers a wide geographic area with stron clinical and academic multi-professional team supporting care. The specialist service includes;
- Rapid Access Clinics
- General Endocrine Clinics
- On site Endocrine Dynamic testing
- Dedicated in-patient bed for Endocrine
- Interventional Radiology
- Multi- disciplinary Thyroid
- Nurse-led thyroid telephone follow up
- Multi- disciplinary Pituitary Clinics
- Thyroid One Stop Shop Clinic for ultrasound and FNA
- Genetic Endocrine Clinic
- Kings Health Partners Centre of Excellence for Neuro-Endocrine Tumours (NET)
- Dedicated Adrenal, NET, Pituitary Thyroid and Thyroid Cancer NDMs

Lipids & Metabolism
Lipid Services
The department’s clinics are provided on both sites and are multi-disciplinary including doctors and specialist nurses. They are linked with paediatric services for genetic disorders provided in the Evelina Children’s Hospital for cascade testing and management of families with lipid disorders. The specialist services we provide include;
- Cardiovascular risk assessment including use of imaging for atherosclerosis
- Investigation and management of intolerance to statins and other lipid-lowering drugs
- Management of complex lipid disorders including HIV dyslipidaemia
- Management of triglyceride (blood fat) disorders
- Genetic diagnosis of familial hypercholesterolaemia
- Management and genetic diagnosis of familial chylomicronaemia syndrome
- Diagnosis and management of rare lipid disorders including low HDL-C syndromes; enzyme deficiencies and cholesterol synthesis pathway disorders
Obesity and Bariatric Medicine
The department’s clinics are multi-disciplinary including doctors, specialist nurses and coordinate with specialist bariatric surgeons and gastroenterologists. The service works closely with mental health services. The specialist services we provide include;
