Inherited Cardiac Conditions Service
The aim of our inherited cardiac conditions (ICC) service is to improve the diagnosis, treatment and outcome of patients with inherited heart conditions. We offer timely diagnosis, high quality care and psychological support to the patient and their family. Please access our Inherited Cardiac Conditions Leaflet by clicking on ICC Leaflet.
Our team of doctors and other health professionals (multi-disciplinary team) provide treatment and support for a range of conditions.
Inherited cardiac conditions are a group of genetic disorders that can affect the heart muscle and the heart rhythm.
Inherited heart muscle conditions
Examples of inherited heart muscle conditions are:
- hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
- dilated cardiomyopathy
- arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy
- left ventricular non-compaction cardiomyopathy.
These conditions can lead to varying degrees of heart failure.
Inherited heart rhythm conditions
Inherited heart rhythm conditions can cause problems with the heart rate and rhythm and include:
- long QT syndrome
- brugada syndrome
- sudden arrhythmic death syndrome
- catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia.
It is important to have specialist input for the diagnosis of these conditions and the screening of family members because of the complex clinical and psychosocial issues involved.
Other conditions
Other conditions also seen in the ICC service include:
- cardiomyopathies
- muscular dystrophies
- families affected by sudden arrhythmic death syndrome (SADS).
The heart muscle and heart rhythm can be affected by a range of inherited cardiac conditions.
Facilities and services
We have access to the following:
- a dedicated echocardiography service
- cardiovascular imaging specialists (cardiac magnetic resonance imaging), cardiac CT, echocardiography
- exercise ECG testing
- ambulatory electrocardiographic monitoring
- signal averaged electrocardiograms
- facilities for non-invasive or minimally invasive electrophysiology investigation
- genetic testing, including specific blood tests which relate directly to ICCs.
Referrals are accepted for patients with suspected inherited cardiac conditions or relatives of patients with inherited cardiac conditions.
