Upper GI surgery referrals

 

We acept referrals from GPs, healthcare professionals and via the NHS e-Referral service, for the following conditions and symptoms:

  • suspected upper GI cancers
  • gastro-oesophageal reflux
  • gallstones
  • obesity
  • pancreatic disease
  • lumps and bumps
  • achalasia and other motility disorders

Enquiries regarding new appointments and all referrals should be emailed to gst-tr.GISurgery@nhs.net or call 020 7188 8875. 

Please identify the speciality you are referring to rather than the specific surgeon and the patient will receive the first available appointment in the most appropriate clinic. Alternatively, surgeon or sub-specialty specific referrals may be addressed to the department or individual surgeons.

Referrals from other hospitals must include a completed Inter-Provider Minimum Data Set or ensure that one is sent within 48 hours of referring a patient.

Two week wait referrals

Sub specialties

  • Oesophageal reconstructive surgery 

    This is a tertiary referral service for patients requiring oesophageal reconstruction following oesophageal trauma, caustic injuries and complications of earlier oesophageal surgery. This service covers south east London, Kent and Sussex as well as other areas.

  • Bariatric surgery 

    We accept referrals for consideration of bariatric surgery as part of a multi-disciplinary assessment. The service provides contact with relevant specialties to assess suitability for bariatric surgery.  

  • Pancreatic surgery 

    This service is provided as part of the joint pancreatic unit with King's College Hospital. As the pancreatic unit for south east London and Kent, referrals can be made directly to King's or to St Thomas’.

    The service at St Thomas’ undertakes all investigation and non-surgical management of pancreatic disease including cancer. Mr Atkinson performs pancreatic surgery at King's College Hospital.

  • Surgery for achalasia 

    We see patients with achalasia and other motility disorders for whom we perform a laparoscopic oesophageal myotomy as either primary treatment or after failed dialation or botox treatment.

    We also offer revisional laparoscopic surgery for patients with problems after previous anti-reflux surgery or oesophageal myotomy.
