National Healthcare Science Week

An event to celebrate National Healthcare Science Week is taking place from 11am-3pm on Tuesday 17 March in Central Hall at St Thomas’ Hospital.

Healthcare scientists working in areas as diverse as medical physics, cardiology and vascular imaging will have information stands at the event, featuring lots of fun and interactive activities.

National Healthcare Science Week is an opportunity to highlight the outstanding work of healthcare scientists and to explain how science and technology are vital in modern patient care.

Jeffery Davison, lead physiologist and tutor in the Department of Cardiac Physiology, says: “We’d like a higher awareness among both patients and staff about the work done by healthcare scientists. As much as 80% of diagnosis in the NHS is down to healthcare science and its diagnostic tools.”

The event is also celebrating a first for Guy’s and St Thomas’ which already provides 60% of healthcare science training in Cardiology across London at Masters level.

Jeffery Davison explains: “We’re very excited because we have just been awarded a doctorate level training programme. We’re the first in the country to get it.”
