The “outstanding levels of compassionate care to patients” provided by Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust have been recognised by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

In its report published today (Tuesday 23 July), the Trust maintained its overall ‘good’ CQC rating, with services for adults in the community now rated ‘outstanding’.

Following visits to adult community, maternity and outpatient services in April and May 2019, the Trust was rated ‘outstanding’ for being caring for the second consecutive time, having achieved the same rating in 2016. ‘Good’ ratings for being effective and responsive and a ‘requires improvement’ rating for safety also stayed the same.

Having previously been rated as ‘good’, the Trust is now also rated ‘outstanding’ for being well-led, with the CQC praising how the leadership at all levels of the organisation allows “staff to respond to the needs of the people who use services in a purposeful way”.

The report demonstrates the major improvements made in the Trust’s community services for adults in Lambeth and Southwark. Rated as ‘requires improvement’ in 2016, they are now rated ‘outstanding’, with inspectors highlighting the “consistent patient-centred treatment”, that “staff were passionate about the care they provided” and that “the Trust planned and provided services in a way that met the needs of local people.”

It gives numerous examples of outstanding practice across the Trust including the holistic care provided to cancer patients, its innovative neuro-rehabilitation pathway and nurse-led clinics in outpatient services.

However the report also includes a number of areas of improvement for the Trust, including its performance against national access and treatment standards, some of its outpatient services as well as the number of staff completing their mandatory training and having an appraisal.

Amanda Pritchard, Chief Executive at Guy’s and St Thomas’ said: “I am delighted that the Care Quality Commission’s report highlights so much of what makes Guy’s and St Thomas’ such a caring and compassionate organisation. It highlights why staff across the Trust are so proud to work here, as well as their dedication to providing the best possible care for our patients.

“I am particularly pleased that our adult community services have been rated as ‘outstanding’ which demonstrates our commitment to providing the best possible community services for patients in Lambeth and Southwark.

“The areas for improvement in the report are things that we are aware of and are working hard to address.”
