A senior radiographer at Guy’s and St Thomas’ has been elected as president of the Society and College of Radiographers.

Sheila Hassan has worked at the Trust for 16 years, overseeing the safe treatment of cancer patients. Her role running the ‘sanctioning room’ – where all doses are checked before the patient starts treatment – ensures that patients receiving radiography have safe and accurate treatment.

Her appointment is the latest chapter in a distinguished career which dates back to 1978. Since returning to radiography in 1999 after a 19-year career break, Sheila has worked her way up through the profession. Until recently, she was chair of the Radiography Board, which co-ordinates national initiatives to deliver effective cancer treatment.

Speaking about her new role, Sheila said: “It is a real privilege to be president of my professional body and I am very excited about the new opportunities this role will give me.

“I am very passionate about being a radiographer and to be in a position to influence and lead the profession is a true highlight in my career.”

The Society and College of Radiographers represents 28,000 diagnostic and therapy professionals and is the only body in the UK representing the whole of the radiographic workforce.
