Guy's and St Thomas' rated 'Good' by CQC

Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust has achieved a ‘good’ overall rating by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) with some services rated ‘outstanding’.

CQC inspectors visited the Trust’s hospital and community services from 7-10 September last year with further unannounced visits taking place later the same month.

In its report published today (Thursday 24 March), the CQC praises staff who its inspectors found to be ‘highly committed to the Trust and delivering high quality patient care’. 

Inspectors reported that ‘patients were positive about the care they received and felt staff treated them with dignity and respect’.

Professor Sir Mike Richards, the CQC’s Chief Inspector of Hospitals, says: “Guy’s and St Thomas’ sets out to provide world class clinical care, education and research that improves the health of the local community and of the wider population – and if you ask their patients, the vast majority would tell you that is their experience.

“Patients were positive about the care they received and felt staff treated them with dignity and respect.”

The CQC rates Guy’s and St Thomas’ ‘outstanding’ for providing ‘caring’ services, ‘good’ for ‘effective’, ‘responsive’ and ‘well-led’ services, and ‘requires improvement’ for ‘safe’ services.

Services provided for children and young people at Evelina London Children’s Hospital on the St Thomas’ site and in the Emergency Department (A&E) at St Thomas’ are both rated ‘outstanding’.

The CQC inspectors also identified some areas for improvement which the Trust recognises it needs to strengthen.

Chief Executive Amanda Pritchard says: “I welcome this report which paints a very positive picture of the compassion and dedication of our staff to deliver high quality care to patients.

“I am delighted that the CQC has highlighted so many areas of excellent practice throughout the Trust and has rated both our children’s hospital and emergency services as outstanding.

“The CQC report also highlights areas for improvement and I look forward to working with our staff, patients and local stakeholders to tackle these together in the weeks and months ahead.”
