Hospital bosses at Guy’s and St Thomas’ were heroes for the day when they took part in a unique fundraising abseil on Friday 13 May.

Chief Executive Amanda Pritchard, Chief Nurse Dame Eileen Sills and Medical Director Dr Ian Abbs joined more than 200 other fundraisers – many dressed as superheroes – for the first ever abseil down St Thomas’ Hospital.

Amanda Pritchard said: “It’s incredible that more than 200 people were at St Thomas’ to take part in the abseil. It really shows the dedication of all our supporters and fundraisers.

“All the money raised will go directly back into our services to ensure we can continue to provide world class care for our patients in an environment that they deserve.”

The fundraising event saw local MP Kate Hoey, patients, supporters and staff abseil 160 feet down the hospital’s North Wing overlooking the River Thames and the Houses of Parliament.

When she was safely back on the ground, Kate Hoey MP said: “It is always a pleasure to support Guy’s and St Thomas’. The abseil was a great experience and I had a wonderful view of the Houses of Parliament from the hospital roof.”

Funds raised from the abseil will support all areas of the Trust, including the new £160 million Cancer Centre at Guy’s, Evelina London Children’s Hospital and Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospitals.

Adding to the atmosphere on the day were activities for spectators to enjoy in the grounds of the hospital including a bake-off, facepainting, ‘hook-a-duck’ in St Thomas’ fountain, music, dancing and much more.

Kieron Boyle, Chief Executive of Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity took part in the abseil dressed as Batman. He said: "I'm delighted to have taken part in this fundraising day. Donations are important on so many levels. They help fund state-of-the-art equipment and many other ideas to improve the care and experience of patients and their families.

“Just as importantly, they demonstrate the energy and enthusiasm of patients, staff and the communities which Guy's and St Thomas' serves."
