Hospitals are smoke-free for staff

Wednesday 1 January 2014

No smoking sign

On 1 January 2014, Guy’s and St Thomas’ introduced a ban on staff smoking on its premises.

Ann Macintyre, Director of Workforce said: "Staff and patients told us that they do not like to see employees smoking outside our hospitals and that we need to help reduce the impact of passive smoking. We hope that introducing this ban will encourage people to give up smoking and send a positive message to patients that we want to create a clean and healthy environment for everyone.”

The Trust is considering how it will extend this ban to patients and visitors in the future to make our sites completely smoke-free.

Staff who would like to quit the habit can get support from our stop smoking service.

The stop smoking service has helped more than 350 patients and staff to take their first steps towards giving up the habit since it was established in 2011. For Stoptober - the national annual stop smoking campaign - 34 staff attended clinics and 20 quit for the whole of October.
