Imaging team shortlisted for prestigious award

A new approach to medical imaging at Guy’s and St Thomas’ has been shortlisted for the British Medical Journal (BMJ) Awards because of its positive impact on patient care.

Experts from the Trust are in the running to receive the prestigious award for their work in establishing how to minimise the side effects of contrast agents used during the imaging process.

Dr Konstantinos Katsanos, consultant interventional radiologist at Guy’s and St Thomas’, says: “The team is delighted to be shortlisted for this award. It’s immensely gratifying that we have been able to translate the underlying concepts of this project into delivering safe and enhanced patient care.”

The team has developed an approach that avoids the use of contrast agents, which can lead to allergic reactions, while retaining high quality images and high rates of patient satisfaction.

The amount of contrast used has been reduced by more than 90% and the feedback received from patients has been positive.

Winners of the BMJ Awards will be announced on 6 May.
