Lord Butler with the Bicycle User Group

Staff from the hospital’s Bicycle Users Group (BUG) welcomed Lord Butler, Chair of King’s Health Partners and BUG patron, as he opened a new bicycle storage facility at St Thomas’.

The ceremony was attended by 20 staff, and the new facility is underneath the Dunhill Gym next to the Evelina. Opened in time for the Olympics to help with resilience so that staff will not have to rely on public transport, the 70 space facility also demonstrates our commitment to the environment and to the well-being of our staff.

Lord Butler, Chair of King’s Health Partners and patron of BUG, said: “It gives me great pleasure to open this new facility at St Thomas’. I hope that staff use it as cycling is good for your health, and I hope that it will encourage others to cycle into work.”

Sustainability manager, and BUG member Alexandra Hammond added: “I am pleased that this previously unused area has been transformed into a facility which is secure and has been fitted out to a high standard so that our staff can store their bicycles safely.

“We hope that staff will use the facility, and we recognise those who cycle to and from work are actively promoting healthier lifestyles in our hospitals.”

It was refurbished with support from Health and Wellbeing committee (funded by the GSTT Charity), the London NHS Travel Network, the sustainability team, and the Thomas Guy Club.

Thanks also go to AMT for providing the refreshments for the event.
