A unique service which helps domestic violence victims in the Emergency Department (A&E) at St Thomas’ Hospital has been commended in the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) Shared Learning Awards.

The REACH service provides a multi-lingual adviser for adults and children who attend the Emergency Department in vulnerable situations, ensuring that domestic violence victims receive sensitive and timely support.

It has had impressive results – with REACH support, almost 50% of domestic violence victims report their incident to the police, compared with a national average of just 16% if victims have not received support.

REACH was one of only three projects shortlisted for the Shared Learning Awards which recognise examples of how NICE guidance and standards are put into practice in the NHS, local authorities, and voluntary organisations.

The REACH service works in line with NICE public health guidance on domestic violence and abuse which recommends specialist advice, advocacy and support in settings where people may report violence and abuse.
