Health watchdog the Care Quality Commission (CQC) highlights praise from patients in a report published following an unannounced inspection at Guy’s Hospital in August.

The CQC found that staff at Guy’s were meeting all the essential standards of quality and safety inspected – these included the care and welfare of people who use our services, meeting the nutritional needs of patients, and assessing and monitoring the quality of service provision.

This inspection visit focused on patients who were being admitted for, or who had undergone, surgery.

Patients who spoke to the CQC inspectors said they had received the care, treatment and support they expected and were fully involved in decisions about their surgery.

One patient said “Both doctors and nurses have been outstanding” while another said “I couldn’t fault the time and trouble taken by the doctors to make clear what was involved, they came to see me several times to make sure I understood things”.

Staff who spoke to the CQC inspectors said they had received thorough induction and orientation when they had started working at Guy’s and had relevant mandatory training.

One member of staff said: “This is the best ward I’ve ever worked on. It’s very well run, properly staffed and is an example of good multi-disciplinary team working.”

Eileen Sills, Chief Nurse, said: “I am delighted with the report published by the CQC following their inspection visit in August, especially the extremely positive praise from patients.

“Our staff work very hard and it is great to read such positive feedback from both patients and staff.

“However, we are not complacent and we will continue to listen to our patients so that we can learn from their experiences and further improve our care.”
