Specialist children's heart services

Following the Joint Committee of Primary Care Trust’s decision, staff in the Evelina Children’s Hospital at Guy’s and St Thomas’ are delighted that the Evelina has been confirmed as one of the designated centres to provide specialist children’s heart services in England.

We support the outcome of the national Safe and Sustainable Review which will improve the quality of care for children and their families by bringing highly specialist surgical work together in a smaller number of centres.

By working closely with local hospitals to strengthen clinical networks, we will also ensure they receive the best possible care close to home. Some of our patients are diagnosed with cardiac conditions even before they are born, and we will care for these and all our patients throughout childhood and as they move into adult services.

Patients and families are our priority, and we will work with our partners to ensure a smooth transition to new ways of working. We have robust plans to deliver an expanded service following our designation as a specialist surgical centre and look forward to implementing these.

We will work together with Great Ormond Street Hospital as the other designated London Centre, and will wish to engage and work closely with clinical staff at The Royal Brompton Hospital as their expertise will be vital to deliver the best possible service to children and their families into the future
